Is your child ready to train with us?

Morning Star Martial Arts is a structured learning environment focused on teaching Shorinjiryu Karate.  Our long term goal is to give students real self-defense skills.

Children mature at different rates and the age at which a child can productively start training varies by child.  Starting too early will not be beneficial and may be a frustrating experience leaving a lasting poor impression about karate training, removing this opportunity when the time is right.

To see if your child is ready to benefit from training with us, try these simple tests.

1. Have your child stand with their feet together and hands at their sides.  Have them look straight ahead and stand still with no hand moving, head turning, fidgiting, or other motions.

To benefit from our training your child should be able to stand still for three to five seconds.

2. Have your child follow the following three commands after repeating them twice.

    a. Put your hand on your head.
    b. Put the same hand on your tummy.
    c. Put the same hand on your foot.

To benefit from our training your child should be able to follow these commands after one or two tries.

3. Can your child play or be engaged in an activity for at least 30 minutes without requiring parent interaction?  Requiring parent interaction is when a child must have direct support from either their mother or father, regardless of whether the child is engaged with another adult.

To benefit from our training a child should be able to play or be engaged in an activity for at least 30 minutes without requiring parent interaction.

If your child cannot perform any of the above requests please consider waiting a year before joining us.
